REMINGTON Style Rolling Block Rifle
Here we present an antique Whitney Arms Company .38 Long Colt No. 2 “Sporter” Rolling Block Rifle, made circa the 1880s at Whitneyville in New Haven, Connecticut. This rifle would have been competing against the likes of the Winchester Model 1885 in addition to the Remington Rolling Block for a simple, sturdy, single-shot rifle.
This one features a 28-inch octagonal barrel chambered for the .38 Long (Colt) cartridge—a popular one in its day. This was a popular cartridge in its day for handguns and it was both convenient and handy to have a rifle chambered for the same. This rifle would still be great for the range or perhaps small game.
The overall condition is near fine. Original blue finish and case colors. The action is excellent. The bore is bright and reflective with very good rifling. The walnut stock shows use and has a repaired chip on the left side of the wrist—otherwise solid and in nice condition. We have seldom seen this variety of Whitney rifle and not one in this handy little cartridge.
