This gun looks as if it just left the wonderful old Winchester New Haven Ct factory in 1961 when it was made. It is a low # lst year production model that is in not far from new conditon.and looks like it was kept in a time capsul. These terrific woods Deer rifles were made from 1961 in one configuration or another unitl about 1975 with some 260,000 approx having been made. In the lst year they were quite poplular with over 30,000 made this gun was was among he lst 1500 appox made in the lst year.
Mnay do not know that after the lst year or so the hand checkered panels were reduced in size to save labor/time/money but this early gun has the rearly found large checkerin panels with checkering so sharp it almost hurts your hands. Produeced at a time when long time Winchester employeees took pride in their work.
Some time into production it became know that there was a firing pin issue. Winchester will to this day pay for the cost of the upgrade although this one has had the upgrade already done.
We are of the opinion that these are among the finest woods deer rifles ever produced and are as handsome as they are capable
They were offered in a variety of calibers with 308 the most common, some in 243 and 284 the least often found.
