Description:
North America, Eastern United States, Massachusetts, Sturbridge, Gibbs Tiffany & Co., ca. 1840s CE. A rare example of a pocket percussion pistol of a unique, petite form with a hammer that pivots beneath the barrel rather than above – hence the name “underhammer.”. The pocket-sized firearm features a 4″ cylindrical barrel with a hexagonal bore, an octagonal back half, and a hand-carved walnut stock with a brass back strap. The sights are fixed to the top of the barrel and back stock. The side of the barrel bears "CAST STEEL" while "270" is beneath the barrel. Atop the barrel and in front of the back sight is stamped "E.HUTCHINGS & CO," "AGENTS BALTO," "GIBBS TIFFANY & CO," and "STURBRIDGE MASS." in front of a spread American eagle symbol. Incised foliage decorates the diagonal sides of the barrel in front of the back sights. Size: 7.75" L x 3" H (19.7 cm x 7.6 cm); (barrel): 4" L (10.2 cm); (bore): 0.28" W (0.7 cm); .28 caliber
