Description:
RARE TRIALS .45-70 GOVT SPRINGFIELD CHAFFEE-REESE Model 1882 Rifle Antique

1 of 753 Made and Chambered in the Original 45-70 GOVT

Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Chaffee-Reese Model 1882 Magazine Bolt Action Rifle in .45-70 GOVT, manufactured at the Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1884. This is a very nice example of a scarce Chaffee-Reese bolt action repeating rifle. This action was invented by General Reuben S. Chaffee and Jasper N. Reese in 1879, and it was one of the rifles selected by the Magazine Rifle Board of 1882 for field trials with only a total of 753 being produced.

The magazine feed mechanism was a tube loaded through a trapdoor in the butt and employed a double ratchet which moved a cartridge forward one space each time the bolt was cycled. A cutoff switch on the right side of the receiver allowed for single shots while keeping the magazine fully loaded. The system was not popular with the troops in the field and only the initial order was made, making this one of the rarest issue weapons manufactured by Springfield Armory. There is a clear “SWP/1884” cartouche on the left buttstock for Master Armorer and Chief Ordnance Inspector Samuel W. Porter.

The overall condition is fine. Original finish preserved. Strong action. Mirror bright bore with sharp rifling. Solid walnut stock with a clear cartouche. The leather sling is in good shape. A fine example of a hard to find US Trials rifle!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 28 inches.

Caliber: .45-70 GOVT
