Description:
ARVED STOCK BY G. LEUTE. Cal. 16 Ga. / 43 Mauser. NSN. Bbl. 27 3/4", w/ gold inlaid scroll at rear “G. LEUTE, MUNCHEN” are also inlaid on top rib. Bbls. have no proof marks (pre-1890). Rnd. bodied Jones underlever hammer action fitted w/ back spring peninsula locks having serpentine rebounding hammers. Rifle selector pivots shotgun firing pin out of the way allowing rifle bbl. to be discharged by right hammer. A flip up sight nestles into top tang, which is also fitted w/ a block to accept Diopter sight. Action & locks engraved w/ near full coverage, exceptionally well cut & shaded open scroll w/ acanthus highlights. This scroll surrounds game scenes which are bordered by gold inlaid scroll. A pair of chamois are on right side of action & a pair of stags battle on right. A pair of mastiff dogs are on left lockplate & a running doe, chased by a hound, is on the right. A pigeon perches on top strap. Opening lever has gold inlaid accents to relief engraving. Iron trigger guard has scrolled horn extension. Stock of figured European walnut measures 12 1/2" over steel buttplate w/ trap. Right hand Bavarian cheekpiece has relief carved scene of hounds chasing stag & hind, there is relief acanthus carving surrounding checkering pattern at grip which is quite extensive on right side. Matching splinter forend has forward pivoting lever release. MEASUREMENTS: bore diameter: left .659, right .664. Bore Restrictions: left .014 Mod., right .000 Cyl. Wall Thickness: left .030, right .030. DAH: 3 1/2". DAC: 1 3/8". WEIGHT: 7 lbs. 6 oz. CONDITION: good. Bbls. w/ old dark brown patina obscuring damascus finish. Action & locks are clean to silver gray. Stock has a considerable amount of old finish, possibly original. Darkened w/ attic burn & shows quite a bit of wear at grip & forend. Carving remains good. Shotgun bores are very rough. Rifle bore good w/ scattered pitting, is dirty. PROVENANCE: From the JM Davis Museum Collection. (01-19955/MGM). ANTIQUE
