Description:
RARE 1 of 1,000 Model 1899 Army Contract SMITH & WESSON .38 M&P Revolver

Fine Hand Ejector S&W “KSM” Inspected C&R

Here we present a Smith & Wesson .38 Military & Police Double Action Revolver manufactured in 1901 in Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1899, the United States Army and Navy placed an order with Smith & Wesson for two to three thousand Model 1899 Hand Ejector revolvers chambered for the .38 Long Colt U.S. Service Cartridge. With this order, the Hand Ejector Model became known as the .38 Military and Police model.

That same year, in response to reports from military sources serving in the Philippines on the relative ineffectiveness of the new cartridge, Smith & Wesson began making the Military & Police in a new chambering, the 38 S&W Special (a.k.a. .38 Special), a slightly elongated version of the .38 Long Colt cartridge with greater bullet weight and powder. This change was implemented after the first 1000 had been produced. This revolver is from the first 1000 made in the original .38 Long Colt chambering.
This fine revolver has “K.S.M." inspector's marks on the frame, cylinder, barrel, and right grip. “P” is under the barrel. This is the mark of U.S. Ordnance inspector Kelley S. Morse. There are matching serial numbers on the barrel and cylinder. Serial number is in the 13000s, which is correct for this very limited Army acquisition.

The overall condition is fine. Original blue finish and case colors. The action is strong and tight all the way around. The bore is bright with nice rifling. Both of the walnut grips are in very good shape with sharp checkering and clear initials. This is a true rarity for the Smith & Wesson collector.

This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic.

Barrel is 6 inches.

Caliber: .38 Long Colt (S&W .38 MIL.)

Overall condition as seen in photos.
