This gun was engraved by William Gough who was a factory engraver. Beautifully done. Way above his average work. On one side is 2 gold inlaid moose and some gold birds in a tree. On the opposite side is a grizzly walking in the sunrise with birds flying off. Just a beautiful scene! Receiver is probably 90% covered with engraving. Barrel has engraving as well. Fancy deluxe 3X grade wood is in excellent condition with just a few light handling mars. Complete with Winchester sling eyes and a hard rubber buttplate. Original sights include a Marble flip up rear sight, Lyman front sight and folding tang sight. Overall gun is excellent with 95% barrel blue. Receiver is at about 90% blue remaining and starting to turn a soft patina. Beautiful engraved game scenes! This gun is new to the market. It has been in my personal collection for over 40 years and before that it came out of a family in New England who had it since new. Fitted in a unique case that has a place for 2 boxes of cartridges. Also holds an extra clip on the bottom. On the lid is room for 2 extra clips in a slot. Winchester logo on the inside of the case and also a Winchester catalogue of tools accompanies it. Case and cartridges are in excellent condition. One of a kind outfit. I feel this was made for the Extra Finish Arms Catalogue of 1917 that never materialized because of WWI. The facts that I stated here are confirmed by a hand written letter by George Madis. Great gun! Leroy Merz Antique Firearms specializes in antique and vintage Winchesters and other fine American firearms.
