Description: Original circa 1920s pinback button for the Home for Confederate Women in Richmond, VA. About 7/8" in diameter. Good shape as shown. The home, originally called the Home for Needy Confederate Women, was established by the Virginia Legislature in 1898 to provide care for needy female relatives of Confederate soldiers. A new building was finished in 1929 so my take is these buttons were part of the publicity campaign, but they could well be older. Upon entry to the home, residents turned over their estates in exchange for lifelong care. In its heyday the home had more than 70 residents. It closed in the 1980s. $4.95 First Class USPS shipping protected in a box. SOLD |
