Description:
1700s British Antique BRASS BARRELED London Proofed FLINTLOCK BLUNDERBUSS

With Early American Symbolism!

Here we present an antique British Brass Barreled Flintlock Blunderbuss, made circa the 1700s in London, England. The blunderbuss is a firearm with a short, large caliber barrel. They are flared at the muzzle, frequently throughout the entire bore, and used with shot and other projectiles. The blunderbuss is commonly considered to be an early predecessor of the modern day shotgun, with similar military and defensive use. It was effective only at short range, lacking accuracy at long range.

The blunderbuss was the original coach gun, being a short, handy and devastating weapon at close range. It was used in many capacities, not the least of which were for Naval boarding or defending vessels, stagecoach and messenger companies, home defense and more. It was capable of firing up to 20 buckshot in front of 120 grains of black powder, according to Spencer Tucker in Almanac of American Military History, Volume 1.

This one has London proofs on the barrel and an interesting thumb plate design with an American eagle theme. Below the eagle is a quiver of arrows. This may have been made in England but it looks like it made it to the colonies and may have been used in some of the notable conflicts of the era.

The overall condition is very good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape, remaining clear. The stock is in good shape, though it has some little repairs and stable crack on the fore end.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 13-5/8 inches.
