We offer you a “GORGEOUS” Custom Marlin Ballard #6 Schuetzen Style Off-Hand Rifle with a #5 Pope Barrel, Double Set Triggers in 38-55 .39 Caliber.
This rifle was completed in 1984 from the information found in the estate. We know that Master Engraver Robert “Bob” Evans engraved the rifle. It wears a 30” #5 heavy barrel that is marked "H.M. POPE HARTFORD CONN" on the left side flat. The bottom is marked #5 as it was sourced from Winchester and completed by Pope. It is unique being a half round half octagon on the forward part, with the top half of the barrel being fully matted. The bottom of the barrel is stamped “5 / 366 /” with two other numbers at the receiver that I can’t make out. A chamber cast was taken which confirms the caliber as 38-55 Winchester. It also showed that barrel was bored for a .39 caliber (.387) caliber bullet. That measurement was taken off the chamber cast. The bore has 8 grooves with a left hand twist and is in excellent condition with no issues. The rifle serial number is 3104 which is also marked on the butt plate and stock lug. The false muzzle is not rifled and is marked “366”. The receiver and lever are case colored and in excellent condition as shown. The engraving is very finely detailed with a standing Grizzly on one side and an Elk on the other. Bob signed his work at the right side of the circle under the Bear. The forearm is in excellent condition with no issues. The butt stock shows a few cracks as shown and pointed out in the pictures. The highly figured stock is close to exhibition quality as you can see. There was no mold or tools found for the rifle in the estate. This rifle is an “Antique” and requires no FFL for a transfer.
