Description:
NEW YORK STATE PERCUSSION .50 CAL. DOUBLE RIFLE BY NELSON LEWIS OF TROY CIRCA 1860’s. 45” overall with 32” deeply rifled round barrels signed on the center rib “N. LEWIS MAKER TROY, N.Y.”. Oval steel patch box with acorn finial. German silver crescent butt plate, articulated trigger guard and forend ramrod thimble. Walnut stock with handsome double bordered cheek rest. Nicely curled and beveled double triggers and fancy elevator rear and windage adjustable front sights typical of this famous New York State maker. Metal plum browned overall with much of the thinning finish remaining. Lock in perfect working order and both bores are exceptional with near mint rifling. Original wood metal tipped rod. Nelson Lewis was one of the most famous makers of percussion single shot target rifles in the United States from the 1850’s to the 1880’s. His shop in Troy turned out some of the most accurate rifles of the era including rifles used by Union Sharpshooters during the Civil War. He is also known to have made combination double rifle/shotguns for sporting use but his double rifles are very scarce with only a few known.
