Description:
This is an extreme rarity in the Civil War collecting field. This is a very scarce example of being an iron mounted Merrill Rifle. Only approximately 770 were manufactured. This example was once part of the George Moller collection as noted by the little GDM initials marked on the toe. This gun completely originated and was found in the bright. George had the lock professionally and correctly blued. A buddy of mine has one also with nearly identical blue that is original. The barrel shows a completely natural and original patina. The stock shows handling marks and a few hairline cracks. The trigger guard is inscribed Wm. L. Lutzman who was a soldier enlisted in the 1st IN Heavy Artillery. Mechanically works well. These are virtually impossible to find in any condition. I have discussed with many people in looking for an example retaining the majority of original finish and have been told there is none known. This is an extremely rare opportunity to put into your collection.
