It continued to supply martial and private arms to the continental army and citizens until the approximatley the mid 1800s. Henry & Sons manufactured less than 1000 (952 to be exact) of these rifles for the civil war, 876 of those were sold to P.S. Justice to fulfill their contract to the U.S. government. Henry sold 70 to the Catasanga Home Guard and another six were used as sample rifles in an attempt to gain other government contracts. The construction and assembly of these rifles utilized parts from other rifle manufacturers to lower the production price. This led to multiple complaints from the army that centered around the rifle's reliability. The saber rifle uses the brass patch box that was purchased from Sharps when their production transitioned from brass to iron and what looks to be a Harpers Ferry long base adjustable rear sight. The rifle receives its nickname (the Saber Rifle) due to its intent to use massive 26" Type I or II saber bayonet. This rifle is marketed J. Henry & Sons on the perpendicularly of the lockplate with a modified "recurved" guard commonly associated with Henry. The wood stock is in excellent condition and it is mechanically sound. The barrel has minor pitting, but metal overall is clean. The lock plate screw is missing and barrel bands are absent (no evidence of every having rings), but overall the rifle is in very good shape and would make any collection better. This is a chance to own one of possibly less than 100 Henry & Sons marked Saber Bayonet rifle. 574-two four two-1936 SOLD Antique: Yes Rifle Caliber: .58 Manufacturer: Henry & Sons |
