Yes, it is made of real carpet. and measures 16 in. by 22 in. by 8.5 in. with one inside pockets. Impressive, isn't it? Unlike today's wasteful culture, the resourcefulness of people in the old days continues to teach us lessons. When a carpet needed replacing after high traffic areas became too damaged to repair, the parts of the carpet that were still in good shape were cut up to make the bags. Attached to a sturdy frame, carpet bags could last a lifetime. You can only imagine how difficult sewing these must have been. This one is constructed just like those of old, only of new carpet never walked on. It is not to be confused with the tapestry bags. The Carpet bag was a personal baggage light enough for a passenger to carry, as opposed to a large wooden or metal trunk. Described in 1886 as old-fashioned and reliable, "still unsurpassed by any, where rough wear is the principal thing. This bag, is constructed of good Materials and unquestionable workmanship, will last decades. Harken back to the time when Carpet-Baggers roamed freely, carrying their belongings in such bags, and Ladies traveled the rail lines and Stage coaches carrying their items in similar luggage.
Five brass feet allow you to set this bag down and not worry about it tipping. The outer shell is made of a Cotton and Jute blend. Bag is fully lined. Display items not included.
