Description:
This is a good example of the iconic German Gewehr 1888 "Commission Rifle", also known as the Gewehr 88, or GEW 88. It was manufactured by the Steyr Mannlicher firearms division of Österreichische Waffenfabriksgesellschaft (ŒWG, Austrian Arms-Manufacturing Company) in Austria.
The overall condition is good. Strong, crisp action. The bore is bright and reflective with sharp rifling. Solid stock with a low amount of wear (minor dents and dings).some minor replacement parts; metal smoothly rusted or lightly pitted in places, cleaned; principal lettering, numerals and design on metal legible; lightly scratched, bruised or minor cracks repaired; in good working order. Fully functional. Shootable with correct 7.92mm Patrone 88 Ammunition.

One of the defining features of the Steyr Mauser was its thin sheet steel jacket surrounding the barrel. This was a rather unusual element not common to any other Mauser mark of note. The jacket was instituted as a feature intended to maintain the effectiveness of the barrel and the solid wooden body over time, otherwise lengthening its service life and long-term accuracy when exposed to excessive firing and battlefield abuse.
