Description:
For your consideration, a .257 Roberts chambered custom hunting rifle by the celebrated John Dubiel. Having gotten his start at the Hoffman Arms company in Cleveland, John Dubiel eventually founded his own custom rifle shop in 1932, and practiced his craft until his death five years later. Speaking to the quality of his work, his clientele included such notables as Elmer Keith, Charles Askins Sr., and General James H. "Jimmy" Doolittle. This example is built from a Karabiner 98 Mauser action, and the receiver retains the original "?????? 98" markings in Germanic fraktur script. Beyond the receiver, trigger guard assembly, bolt body, and floorplate, however, little of the original rifle remains. Atop the barrel are iron sights consisting of a hooded front and three folding rear leaves calibrated for 100, 200, and 300 yds. Both front and rear sights are mounted on raised, hand stippled ramps. Supplementing the irons is a Unertl "Hawk" 4x scope mounted in a Redfield base. Checkered wrist and forend, the stock terminates at a black forend cap and a serrated steel buttplate. The cheekpiece is of a beaded, pancake-type. The bolt body has been chemically etched in a fishnet pattern to aid in oil retention. In order to function in concert with the scope, the original 3 position Mauser safety has been replaced by a 2 position, short throw flag. Chambered in a capable and available caliber, this piece would make an excellent addition to the collection of any with a passion for interbellum American custom rifles. .257 Roberts
