Description:
The gun offered is a 1855 Colt Revolving Rifle, Full Stock Sporting Rifle. The rifle is a 56 caliber, five shot, revolving cylinder precussion rifle. These guns were manufactured by Colt between 1854 and 1864. Less than 2,000 of these guns were made in this Sporting Rifle configuration making this a very rare model. This is the first repeating rifle adopted by the U.S. Military (in the Military configuration). This gun is marked with serial number 3648. The serial numbers of all configurations of this gun were mixed based upon the order of manufacture rather that a dedicated series for each model.
The gun is in excellent mechanical condition and operates smoothly. All parts appear to be original with the exception the forward barrel band. The gun has been handled extensively wearing away most of the markings or lables, but there is very little corrosion or pitting to the exterior metal surfaces,
The serial number is found on the Butt Plate with a part number 343 on the butt end or the lower tang. Additonal serial numbers are normally found on the bottom of the barrel, under the front stock section and under the rear stock, but have not been verified by the seller. The "Col Colt lable" on top of the frame is almost fully worn away, but the "Col Co" can be distinguished faintly under magnification.
This would be an impressive addition to any Colt collection.
