Rare, early S. Newhouse # 5 Slickpan bear trap, all original, never taken apart or messed with. This trap was made between 1855-1858 before Newhouse stamped the pans on their bear traps. It has very strong, stamped, forged springs, and the early riveted on teeth, brazed with brass from the factory, 34.5" long. The long pointed cross is typical of the very early model traps.
This S. Newhouse # 5 early model slickpan has the swivel coming off the third link of the base, after 1863 the chain setup was changed and the swivel was connected to the base link off the base. Hard to find trap, especially all completely original and in this nice of condition. This trap is much rarer than the later models with cast teeth and stamped pans.
