Marlin Ballard Rifle in .32-40, made circa 1876-1891 in New Haven, Connecticut. The Ballard rifle is a single shot breechloading rifle with a falling block action. The internal components are contained in the breech block protect them from fouling and dirt. Marlin-Ballard rifles featured automatic extractors. Some models had double set triggers, which is considered by riflemen of the time to be of superior quality. Several variants included a reversible firing pin, so that the user could fire either rimfire or centerfire cartridges. The Ballard design was utilized during the Civil War and retained following the conflict as it was simple and rugged. Though Winchester Model 1866s and 1873s were the latest and greatest in firepower, the Ballard was the sidearm of many during this period characterized by conflict and westward expansion. This rifle is outfitted with a globe front sight on the heavy octagon barrel and a folding tang mounted peep sight. The left side of the frame has the two-line Marlin address and Ballard patent information. It has a smooth, fancy walnut stock and forearm. The overall condition is fine. Robust, tight actions. Bright, nicely rifled bore. Excellent stock, smooth finish. Finely engraved frame. “RJM” is gold inlaid atop the barrel at the breech. This rifle is a handsome piece of history that would be great for display and maybe even a match! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 30 inches.
