Description:
General Specs: Burgess, Year 1897, 12 Gauge, 6lbs 11oz, Chokes Cylinder, LOP 13 7/8"
Serial Number: 3340

The end of the 19th Century was an amazing time.  The country was becoming industrialized, New York City became electrified in 1895, and in 1893 the prolific inventor Andrew Burgess started the Burgess Gun Co. in Buffalo New York to produce his patented and unique pump-action shotgun.  ANY Burgess pump shotgun is a rare find, but very few were made as the Folding Model.  Designed to fold at the junction of the receiver and breech and fit into a belt worn holster, this shotgun could easily be concealed under one’s coat and comfortably carried.  Popular with law enforcement, Wells Fargo delivery personnel, prison guards, and travelers alike, the shotgun held 6 rounds of 12-gauge shells and could be deployed with a flip of the wrist ready to use in less than 2 seconds!  An enthusiastic Burgess salesman made a visit to the New York City Police Board and met with then President of the organization Theodore Roosevelt with a Burgess Folding Shotgun hidden in its holster under his jacket.  Once inside Roosevelt’s office, he drew the gun, flicked it to battery, and fired 6 blank rounds toward the ceiling, shocking all involved.  Roosevelt was so impressed he order 100 guns for the prison systems on the spot.  Apparently a true story!  This gun, sn3340 was built about 1897 based upon its serial number.  Burgess was only producing these guns from 1888-1899, when Winchester bought the company out and moth-balled its competitor.  This antique can be shipped to any address in the U.S.A. without an FFL requirement.  THE GUN IS IN SUPERB, FACTORY ORIGINAL CONDITION, UNALTERED IN ANYWAY, with 97% barrel blue, 94% blue on the action and wrist metal parts, excellent bore, and most all of the original factory finish on the buttstock and forend.  The checkering is original and still sharp and distinct.  This is a rare and unique firearm that would be a fine addition to any vintage American gun collector’s display and comes with the belt holster used to carry the gun on your hip.  Fully functional and choked cylinder (.002), what a crowd that would gather at your local skeet club!  The condition, rarity, uniqueness, and desirability make this a valuable investment grade firearm.  The prices have increased each time one of these guns have been sold.  Only 3-4 have surfaced for sale in the last 15 years, with the last one selling at Rock Island in 2015 for $20,700 and it was not in as good of condition as this one is.  We have priced this gun so that the new owner will have instant equity in his/her investment.  Review the photos and you will see a relic of the past, over 125 years old, in remarkable, factory original condition.  Don’t miss this opportunity!  Thanks for looking!
