MAUBEUGE ARSENAL Military GENDARMERIE Pistol
Here we present an antique French Pistolet modèle An IX, or Pistol Model An 9, made at the Maubeuge Arsenal in France circa 1812. This model was manufactured at all three of the French Arsenals, Charleville, Maubeuge, and St-Etienne. This pistol was made as a military police pistol and was converted from flintlock to percussion when the more reliable percussion firing system came about, which greatly extended the life of these type pistols!
A Gendarmerie is a military force with law enforcement duties among the civilian population. The Police Nationale is responsible for Paris and other urban areas whereas the Gendarmerie is responsible for small towns and rural areas with fewer than 20,000 inhabitants. These pistols are of robust construction with lots of brass for support. The bore is a massive .60 caliber. Without knowing the exact date of the manufacture of this pistol, it is possible, if not likely, that it was used during the latter Napoleonic Wars.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. Good, clear bore (aged). Solid and secure stock/grip. The left side of the grip is littered with proof marks. “M34” is stamped on the left side of the barrel.
