Handy, Short-Barreled Saddle Ring Carbine
Here we present a C&R Winchester Model 1894 Lever Action Trapper Carbine, made in 1921 in New Haven, Connecticut. The credit for the design of such a prolific firearm again lies with John Moses Browning, who lent his extensive design talents to a large number of weapon types throughout his career. The Model 1894 was the first Winchester rifle made for use with the new technology of smokeless powder and was developed as a hunting rifle. Over 7.5 million were produced from 1894 until 2006. While various cartridges were supported throughout the run of the gun, the .30-30 Winchester became its staple. In practical use, the Model 1894 became a favorite for general shooters and hunters alike. To this day, it remains a deer hunting favorite, and, in all likelihood, more deer have been taken with the 1894 than any other.
One of the most popular subcategories of collecting pre-’64 Winchester lever-actions is the “trapper,” or “baby carbine” as it was originally called, a model with a barrel shorter than the standard length of 20". The term “Trapper” was a term never used by Winchester, who referred to them as “Special Short Carbines”. These little carbines are exceedingly rare, were never cataloged, and were ultimately discontinued in 1933.
This one still has a shorter than standard carbine-length barrel (17”), however, it used to have a 15” barrel. This one comes with a letter from the ATF replying to the last owner of this little carbine, saying that they removed the original barrel and returned the rest of the gun to him.
The overall condition is good. Original finish/patina. Signs of weathering throughout. Strong action. Bright, rifled bore. The stock is solid (two stable splits on the left wrist at the frame). Clear, legible markings.
