Description:
Sharps rifles are well known for their use in the old west as both hunting rifles and long-range target rifles. Over one hundred years later the rifle still has a dedicated following. Like the Trapdoor Springfield rifle, the Sharps rifle stated life as a black-powder muzzle loader. Some saw use by Union Sharpshooters during the U.S. Civil War. Indeed, this is where the term Sharpshooter originated from. After the war, many were converted to the cartridge-fed, falling block action we are familiar with today. New rifles were built from scratch as well for the civilian market. The rifle shown here is in very good condition and is chambered for the famous .45-70 Gov’t. Although, previously owned, it has never been fired, spending all its time in a safe. There is no box. What you see in the pictures is everything. The finish is about 99 percent, except for one tiny spot on the butt plate and one inside the lever. There is a very light scratch on the barrel on the left hand side. The bore is at 100 percent since it has only been test fired at the factory in accordance with federal regulations. The wood stock exhibits the most wear with some shallow dents in the surface of the wood. Correcting this is a simple task, performed by steaming them out using a wet wash cloth and an iron. The rear sight is a nice Soule type long range tang sight while the front sight is of the globe type. According to the original owner, the rifle was purchased new without the rear dovetailed sight from a gun store in California. With the rear trigger set, the front trigger breaks crisply at a very low 1.5-2.2 oz. Caution is recommended when firing the rifle in this manner. The 1874 Sharps is one of the finest single shot rifles available and is one of the most accurate, thanks to the long sight radius. The most famous shot taken with a Sharps rifle occurred in 1874 during the Second Battle of the Adobe Walls in Texas. The outpost was inhabited at that time by 28 hunters and tradesmen later growing to about 100 men during the course of the battle in which the faced around 700 Comanche warriors. On the third day after the attack had begun, fifteen Commanche warriors were seen to be observing the outpost from a bluff nearly a mile away. William “Billy” Dixon, considered to be a crack shot by the other men, took aim with a “Big Fifty” Sharps (most likely chambered in .50-90 Sharps) and dropped one of the riders from his horse. Seeing their fellow warrior killed from such a great distance discouraged further attacks against the settlement. Dixon himself considered it a lucky shot. A post battle survey by a team of US Army surveyors measured the distance to be about 1538 yards. This event demonstrates that any rifle, used correctly by a competent marksman, can be used to hit a target at distances beyond what most would consider feasible.
