Description:
The Remington Model 81 was the successor to the very popular Remington Model 8 which was famously used by law enforcement in the ambush of Bonnie and Clyde in 1934. Designed by John Moses Browning, the famed inventor of the 1911 pistol and many other firearms, the Model 8 and 81 both used the long-recoil method of operation as used in the Browning Auto-5 shotgun and the Browning M2 .50-caliber machine gun. This type of operation was used due to its greater reliability over gas-operation which back then could not be done with the powders then available. The Model 81 was available in five different cartridges. These are the .25 Remington, .30 Remington, .32 Remington, .35 Remington, and the .300 Savage. For now, we’ll just cover the .35 Remington round since this rifle is chambered for it. The .35 Remington cartridge was designed to compete with Winchester’s .35 WSL (Winchester Self Loading) cartridge. Winchester later introduced the improved .351 and .401 WSL cartridges in an effort to compete with the .35 Remington. Ultimately, the .35 Remington was the only cartridge that lasted into the 21st Century, quickly leaving its Winchester competitors behind. Even today, the .35 Remington is popular for deer hunting, though it is usually fired from the barrel of a Marlin 336 rather than a Remington rifle. The Model 81 shown here was made in 1940 and is in good condition for its age (82 years old). Effectively, it retains 95 to 98 percent of the finish. The rear iron sight has some finish missing on the top surface. There is some light rust on the lower left side of the receiver. There are minor dings in the wood. Steaming these out should be possible, however. As can be seen in the pictures, a Williams scope mount and rings were added, and a Weaver K2.5 scope mounted. The scope is in excellent optical condition. Scopes are usually mounted on an offset mount on the Model 81 primarily to allow the ejection of spent casings but it also allows the shooter to still use the iron sights if necessary. A rubber cheek pad has been bonded to the stock to help with using the scope. Mechanically, the 81 is in great shape, and operates as it should. The trigger pull is consistent and short. The bolt is in excellent shape with little in the way of pitting or rust. The bore is in pristine condition. Like most hunting rifles, this one was fired infrequently.
