Here we present an antique Remington “Split Breech” Type II Carbine, made circa 1865 in Middletown, Connecticut by Savage Revolving Arms under contract. These guns were the predecessors to the more familiar Rolling Block rifles and carbines that became so prevalent to militaries and civilians the world over. This example has a more robust action, barrel, and stock than other rolling blocks and is chambered in the .50 caliber rimfire cartridge. This Type II variant was contracted for in 1864 by the Union government for 15,000 units, but the first delivery of 1,000 carbines was not made until September of 1865, five months after the end of the Civil War. The remaining guns in the contract were delivered by May of 1866. The government, not needing them any longer due to the end of Civil War hostilities, sold them back to Remington who sold many of them overseas to France during the Franco-Prussian War, as it did with many other surplus guns from the ACW. As a result of this and attrition, these already scarce guns are all the scarcer in the US. These guns are very rare and are highly sought after amongst collectors of Remingtons, early breech-loaders, and US martial arms. This was a very short, handy, sturdy, and reliable firearm. It would have been extremely handy from horseback. It is marked “US” on the butt plate tang. There is a “C” under the barrel band. The walnut stock has an “ER” hand-carved on the left forearm. The overall condition is good+. Excellent action. Nice, well-rifled bore. There is a crack on the left side of the wrist where the wood was already fairly thin. A very nice example of a rare Remington carbine! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 20 inches. Caliber: .50 Rimfire Overall condition as seen in photos.
