Description:
FINE RARE c1910 J.P. SAUER & SOHN Bär DOUBLE-SHOT .25 ACP Pistol German C&R

4-SHOT FLAT Pocket Pistol with SWIVELING MAGAZINE BLOCK

Here we present a Rare John P. Sauer & Sohn Double Bär Double-Barrel Pistol in .25 ACP, manufactured circa 1910 in Suhl, Germany. The Sauers family can trace their gunmaking heritage back to 17th Century Suhl. They produced weapons for both civilians as well as the military.
This little pistol is unique, to say the least. It is very flat and thin. It makes use of aspects of revolver technology with an internal hammer operated by a (very European) folding double action trigger. Rather than firing a single cartridge at a single trigger pull, this one fires two rounds of .25 ACP. Though seldom seen in today’s firearms, .25 ACP was a popular chambering for a pocket gun just like this and being shot with one— much less two—.25 caliber bullets is highly undesirable. The “cylinder” is a flat block which swivels manually to offer another salvo of two .25 ACP cartridges. One has to depress the lever on top that locks into the “cylinder stop notch”. The ejector rod is simply a small poker that is threaded into the bottom of the grip frame. This design reminds one of the Schüler Reform pistol, which also features a flat design with a double action only mechanism and a stacked barrel approach in .25 ACP.

While these would have been attractive 50 years prior, they were thoroughly outclassed by the first waves of early self-loading (semi-automatic) pistols that were coming out. As a result, only a few hundred are thought to have been produced, keeping it both unique and rare.
The overall condition is excellent. Bright original blued finish. Excellent action. Bores are bright. The grips are in very good shape with low wear.
