Turkey bought thousands of the surplus Model 88 rifles which were updated circa 1905 for the current 8mm Mauser ammunition using the spitzer (pointed) bullet. These can be identified by the clip guide at the top rear of the receiver, the notch cut in the receiver ring top for the longer round, and the cover over the magazine bottom. This rifle was manufactured by the Danzig Arsenal in 1891 and it is so marked on top of the chamber. Forward of that is an S designating tha tthe bore is for the standard 8mm Mauser round. The left side of the receiver is marked Gew 88 and the right side of the chanmber has four very clear imperial German proof marks. The bolt knob and body have the Turkish cresent stamp. The bore is fine with bright rifling, an unusual occurrence in these Turkish Model 88 rifles. The rifle has a smooth dark finish overall. The stock is very good with light to moderate issue dents and dings and traces of the German inspection stamps on the right side of the butt. The cleaning rod and sling swivesl are present. The action functions correctly. This is a much nicer than average Turkish Model 88 Commission rifle. SOLD Antique: Yes |
