BRITISH Antique Pattern 1858 .577 ENFIELD SHORT Rifle-Musket SABER BAYONET
2-Band NCO or Sergeant’s Rifled Musket
Here we present an antique Enfield Pattern 1858 2-Band Short “Sergeant’s” Rifle-Musket with the saber bayonet, made in England in 1862. This would have been issued to NCOs and perhaps other troops besides the infantry, who were issued full length muskets. Troops such as artillery and the like would have benefited from a shorter, lighter weapon and some of the loss of reach was made up with this very long saber bayonet. There was also a version of this rifled musket that was fitted with brass hardware that was intended for naval use.
The overall condition is very good. Excellent action. The bore is in good shape with strong rifling. Solid stock with signs of use. “1862” and “TOWER” are marked on the lock. There is a round stamp on the right side of the butt stock in which is marked “TOWER-LONDON/1862” and the number “1” is directly beneath. The saber bayonet and sheath are in good shape with some minor etching on the blade from moisture.
