Description:
"

This is one of the best U.S. Springfield Model 1816 Type II flintlock muskets in existence. The 42"" round 69 caliber barrel has an excellent, bright smooth bore. The gun has approx. 95% of its original arsenal brown finish with some wear at the muzzle from bayonet attachment and a little wear on the bands and trigger guard. The lock has virtually all of its bright bluish case colors. The barrel has very crisp P over eagle over V inspection and proof stamps on the left side of the breech. The lower left barrel flat is stamped S.M.Co. and the top of the chamber is stamped U over a with 27 to the right. The barrel tang is dated 1829. The tail of the lock is stamped vertically SPRING over FIELD over 1829 with the eagle (lightly stamped at the top) forward of the cock. The stock is excellent with sharp edges and a few storage dents. The left flat has a crisp AH (Asahel Hubbard) final inspection stamp. In addition, there is a larger oval EB (Elizur Bates) over 3 stamp to the rear indicating that this musket went through the inspection process for alteration to percussion. Muskets from the 1830's and later were selected so this one escaped. LJ is stamped to the rear of the trigger guard tang. This is followed by an oval LS (Luther Sage) inspection stamp. The buttplate, which retains almost all of its brown finish, is stamped US on the tang. The brown sideplate has an S subinspection stamp and the front triggerguard tang is stamped JBK with the rear tang having a B. The top jaw is stamped H. the swivels and bright ramrod are present. The action functions correctly. Don't miss this super Springfield U.S. Model 1816 Type II! It won't last long.
