Here we present a C&R Vincenzo Bernedo Semi-Automatic Pistol made circa 1920 in Eibar, Spain. Vincenzo Bernedo was born in Elgoibar and began his business as a gunsmith in 1912. By 1913, he had his own shop where he employed eight workers. His business picked up when World War I began in 1914, and by 1918, he had between 20 and 40 people working for him. But the end of the war in 1919 was a hard time for Bernedo, where it appears he closed shop for a while. He restarted his business in 1920, only to last about a year before selling his factory to Bonifacio Echeverria in 1921.
During World War I Bernedo made Ruby pistols for Gabilondos & Urresti, and also Eibar type pistols chambered in 6.35mm and 7.65mm that he sold under his own brand and marked V. Bernedo. Early post-War manufactured pistols based on the 1919 patent were marked “1920 PISTOLA ORIGINAL DE BERNEDO PATENTE” but these are scarce and most are marked “PISTOLET AUTOMATIQUE/BERNEDO/PATENT 69952”, like this example.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. Original Finish. Bright bore. Both grips (non-matching) are in good shape and remain firm. Clear markings. The “GALESI” marked box is in good shape.
