Description: From the Standard Catalogue of Smith and Wesson 4th Ed: “There have always three main concepts driving the manufacture of K frame .22s: 1) They make an ideal outdoorsman’s small game hunting or plinking revolver. 2) For the first half of the 20th Century, K frame revolvers dominated traditional bullseye target shooting. The K frame .22 Target models made ideal companions to the K .32 and K .38 revolvers. 3) K frame .22s make ideal training guns for police officers or other individuals whose carry gun is a .38 caliber K frame. The low cost of .22 ammunition, along with its milder report and recoil allow for more training rounds.” In one sense or another, all three of these reasons still apply today. The low cost of .22 ammo makes shooting a .22 revolver easier, whether it be for practice or plinking for fun. The K-22 Masterpiece was intended to fill all of these roles, and today, it can still do so. Although many police agencies no longer issue revolvers, there are still many K frame or similar revolvers still in use by hunters, target shooters, and others. People new to revolvers may want to practice with a 22 revolver before shooting a 38, 357, or larger calibers. The K-22 pictured above is an early production with the narrow serrated top rib. According to the serial number and The Standard Catalogue of Smith & Wesson, 4th ed., this revolver was made in 1948. It has the standard 0.375” checked hammer and 0.265” serrated hammer. The front sight is a 1/10” Patridge. The frame has five screws, the upper side plate screw later being deleted from production in 1955. The condition of the bluing is typical for a revolver that has seen a fair, but not extensive amount of use. The barrel exhibits light holster wear, as do the front edges of the cylinder. The most notable finish loss is on the underside of the trigger guard. Otherwise, the K-22 retains the majority of its bluing. Interestingly, the right side of the hammer exhibits some wear of the case hardening as would be expected, but the left side does not. The grips exhibit light wear, with a rough spot on the bottom. In contrast, the bore looks like it left the factory yesterday. It should be a very accurate gun. Mechanical condition can be rated as excellent. This K-22 would make an excellent addition to any S&W collection.
