Description:
CHAMELOT & DELVIGNE Antique LEFAUCHEUX Style Belgian 11mm PINFIRE Revolver
ENGRAVED Mid-19th European Self Defense Sidearm
Here we present an antique Chamelot & Delvigne Lefaucheux Style Pinfire Revolver, made in Belgium circa the 1860s. The Chamelot-Delvigne was a revolver developed by the Belgian gunsmith J. Chamelot in partnership with Henri-Gustave Delvigne. Delvigne was a French soldier and inventor. Though Chamelot & Delvigne produced revolvers years earlier, they rose to fame with their service revolver model 1873. It was the first double-action revolver used by the French Army. It was produced by Manufacture d'armes de Saint-Étienne from 1873 to 1887 in about 337,000 copies. Although replaced by the Modele 1892 revolver, it was nevertheless widely used during the First World War and issued to reserve units in 1940. The Resistance made widespread use of it during the Occupation.
In 1835, a notable gun maker and inventor patented one of the first self-contained firearms cartridges. This very early design included a case with ball, powder and primer, but what made it different from what was to come later in cartridge development was the “firing pin” that projected out of the side of the case. It was this pin that was struck and detonated the primer inside. His son, Eugene, would build on Casimir’s invention, designing a pistol to take advantage of it. The hammer would be flat and smash down on the side of the cylinder, from which the pin of the cartridge would project. This revolver and pistol design would become prolific, especially in Europe throughout the 19th Century, being adopted by militaries, used by civilians and police, and even being sold for use during the American Civil War. Many makers made both licensed and unlicensed copies.
Interestingly, this example has the loading gate on the left side of the frame. This allows a right-handed dominant user to use the left, less dominant hand, to reload more quickly. A much more practical and tactical approach for a pinfire revovler!
The overall condition is good. Strong action, there’s a slight wiggle in the cylinder. Semi-bright bore, slightly dimming towards the muzzle. Finely detailed engravings on the frame and cylinder. Both grips are seated firmly and contain as much wear as you’d expect. Liege proofed on the cylinder.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 5-3/4 inches.
Caliber: 11mm Pinfire
Overall condition as seen in photos.
