Description:
Knife bayonet for the Krag Jörgenssen Rifle M/1894 and Carbine M/1912, unusual for its scabbard and frog.  This is NOT the more common U.S. Model 1892 bayonet for the Krag Jörgenssen Rifle.
The locking mechanism is said to be the inspiration for the locking mechanism used for the subsequent US Springfield and Garand bayonets.
The scabbard is steel with a ball point. It was originally either blued or browned but was often painted black when the initial finish wore out.  This example appears to have been painted black but, at some point, the black paint was expertly removed.
The frog is quite unique. The steel scabbard fits closely in the metal sleeve riveted to the leather (in excellent condition) and a leaf spring inside the sleeve engages a raised rib on the back side of the scabbard to lock it in place.  By pressing the tab extension of the leaf spring, the soldier could remove the bayonet and scabbard together from his belt frog.
The overall condition of all metal, wood, and leather is excellent.
The bayonet and scabbard throatpiece are matching numbered 2087 so a very early mode (over 220k were made ),  .
