Description:
Pending Sale. FFL not required. This is a Savage and North Navy .36 percussion revolver. There were approximately 20,000 of these made in 1861 and 1862. They were made specifically for Civil War combat, with many being sold to the Union Army, and most of the rest sold by nefarious means to Confederate soldiers and Southern Militia. These pistols are huge, just about the same size as an antique Colt Dragoon. (See comparison photo) Because they were cocked with the middle (second) finger and then fired with the forefinger they are considered to be the forerunner of double action firearms. The cylinder is large, and easily capped. The placement of the nipples allowed spent caps to simply fall off and not jam the mechanism when fired. Barrel is 7" and in reasonable condition.
This revolver has a low serial number, 2708, visible in the photos. It is in really excellent condition and was professionally nickeled at some point in its history. The edges are exceptionally clean and sharp and the pistol looks beautiful. The grips on Savage Navy's are thin and subject to chipping and breaking. These grips have been strengthened and are strong and beautiful. The nipples on the gun are sharp and clear. Please email any questions.
