Payment Types Accepted: checks, cashiers/bank check, money order Description: ONE OF THE RAREST 1895s I'VE OFFERED: EARLY FLAT SIDE MODEL IN .40-72 CALIBER WITH OCTAGON BARREL AND LONG LYMAN RECEIVER SIGHT, WITH CALL-IN SHEET. The Winchester factory info on this one shows that the serial number was applied November 27, 1896 and that it is a rifle, caliber .40/72, octagon barrel, plain trigger, received in the warehouse January 6, 1897 and shipped January 22, 1897. Flat side receivers were only made for the first few years of production before being replaced by the standardized scalloped frame. Octagon barrels were only offered on special order for .38-72 and .40-72 caliber rifles. And, the .40-72 was by far the least produced caliber in the Model 1895. To find a flat side .40-72 with octagon barrel is a true rarity. This is another rifle that came out of here in Montana. It appears the Lyman receiver sight has always been on this rifle as there is still some good blue underneath the sight (visible when the sight is elevated). The receiver is mostly aged to gray/brown with some very aged blue in the most protected areas and some on the magazine. The barrel shows good aged and thinning blue that is mixing with brown. All markings are clear. It has the correct 26" barrel length for this caliber and is fitted with the original buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact and standard small blade Winchester front sight. The stock and forend show normal light handling marks with no cracks or chips and tight wood to metal fit. The forend retains the factory ebony wedge inlay in the tip. The action is tight and the bore is generally excellent throughout with any frostiness or roughness extremely light. One can search for years for a n unaltered flatside, octagon .40-72 with no results. Another history-filled 125 year old Winchester!
