Another gun that came out of Montana, this one was received in the warehouse on Sept. 8, 1888 and shipped on October 22, 1888 as a rifle, .40-82 caliber, plain trigger and round barrel. The .40-82 is an interesting and powerful caliber that is simply the big .45-90 case gradually necked to .40 caliber. (like the .40-65 is based on the shorter .45-70 case). The barrel, magazine and receiver have aged to a really attractive thinning dark brown patina. The markings are all fine and the barrel is fitted with an original buckhorn rear sight with elevation bar intact paired with a later Sheard, Tacoma, Washington patented 1900 blade front sight Wood shows tight wood to metal fit and only normal handling with no cracks or chips. There is some honest light saddle wear to the bottom and left sides of the forearm (it is a Montana rifle after all), action is tight, fine screw heads and a fairly bright excellent bore with only a small spot or two of light roughness! Lots of history in this attractive '86. SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1886 Serial Number: 22XXX Barrel Length: 26" ROUND Condition: VG |
