Description:
*SALE PENDING* Impressive John Whately, Birmingham, England, Flintlock Long Fowler, 9 Ga, mfg. circa 1800-1810. This is a very fine and original big-bore fowling piece of impressive size, quality, and condition. John Whately the younger made guns in Birmingham between approximately 1788-1833 and is best known for manufacturing Northwest style guns for the Native American trade. This gun features a 53 7/8" long barrel fitted with a silver blade front sight and Birmingham private proofs (Crown over "P" and Crown over "V") stamped on the breech. The inside diameter of the bore measures approximately .800" or just about 9 Gauge. The lock is inscribed "Whately" and remains in it's original unaltered form with all original components. The touch hole has been neatly relined during the period of use. The metal has a smooth rich dark plum patina overall. The stock features a crosshatch style checkered wrist with a very attractive warm appearance. A thin coat of varnish has been applied which very well may be original or is at least done in period. Regardless much of the varnish has worn away and the wood has a great look. There is a sturdily repaired crack under the forearm which runs between the tip of the triggerguard and ramrod entry pipe. Additionally there is a typical 1/2" crack ahead of the rear lock screw and some old worn loss above and ahead of the lock with a fine 2" check under the lock. Original engraved brass buttplate, sideplate, triggerguard, and turned ramrod pipes all have a lovely mellow luster. Original horn forend tip and incredibly the original brass tipped wood ramrod has survived in excellent condition. The barrel is secured by two wedges and all screws are original throughout. The action is strong and crisp and functions flawlessly. The hammer has just a little play on the tumbler but nothing of concern. The roller frizzen snaps shut and springs forward securely. In spite of weighing 10 lbs 12 oz and measuring 70" long overall the gun is very well balanced and shoulders with ease. An extraordinary early fowling piece that really makes a statement over the mantle! Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique firearms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only.
