Description: Thompson Center Arms Model First Generation Contender "Super 14" .30 .30 Winchester caliber single shot hunting pistol, 14 inch round bull (means heavier) "Super 14" barrel, blue finish, top break-open action, fully adjustable target rear sight with "Patridge style" leaf, brass insert ramped front sight with a "peep style" ring surounding the ramp (the peep ring is easily removable without tools), adjustable trigger, allowing the shooter to change both take-up and overtravel, permitting user selection of a range of trigger pulls ranging from a fairly heavy trigger pull suitable for carrying the pistol while hunting to a "hair trigger" suitable for long range target shooting, etched cougar on both sides of the receiver (photo engraving process), custom american walnut wood grips designed by Steve Herrett including a thumbrest shelf for a right handed shooter, and a beavertail forend in matching finish. The action breaks open by pulling sharply rearward on the trigger guard spur. The firing mechanism has dual, frame-mounted firing pins — one for rimfire cartridges and one for centerfire rounds. A hammer-mounted firing pin selector allows either type of cartridge to be fired. The frame accepts interchangeable barrels available in 10 different calibers. This original or first generation (G1) Contender model was introduced in 1967. There are 3 variants. The difference between these variants is the hammer design. The third variant has a hammer with a horizontal bolt (or cross stud) for choosing the center fire firing pin, manual safe or the rimfire firing pin. SN = 178826 This gun was made in the first half of 1981 and has the third variant hammer design of the first generation (G1) guns. 1981 production (January - June) started with SN 173517 and ended with SN 181663. The second generation (G2) was introduced in 1998. The G2 guns have a smooth-sided receiver without the etched cougar. The most unusual feature of the Contender is how the barrel is attached to the frame. By removing the forend, a large hinge pin is exposed. By pushing this hinge pin out, the barrel can be removed. Since the sights and extractor remain attached to the barrel in the Contender design, the frame itself contains no cartridge-specific features. A barrel of another caliber or length can be installed and pinned in place, the forend replaced, and the pistol is ready to shoot with a different barrel and pre-aligned sights. This allowed easy changes of calibers, sights, and barrel lengths, with only a flat screwdriver being required for this change.
