Description:
This is a Model 1889 cartridge box issued with the .38 caliber Navy Model 1889 Colt Revolver and used until 1903. The interior of the pouch has the wood block bored out for 6 loose .38 caliber cartridges and two large 1 3/8 inch diameter circular cut outs to accommodate cartridge packs that were essentially an early speed loader. The pouch has two belt loops on the back (one is separated just below the rivet) and a brass front snap with “U S N" embossed in an oval. The piece measures approx. 5-1/4" long BY 2-1/4" high BY 2-1/4" deep. The seldom-seen pouch is in good to very good condition with a crazed surface, and some seam separation at the back hinge. The wood insert is fully intact.
