This is a fantastic rifle that has a 3-05 dated, "RIA" barrel (Rock Island Arsenal was unable to manufacture complete 1903 rifles until 1908, due to a parts shortage). The barrel retains 97-98% of the original blued finish with some trace freckling at the muzzle. The receiver has a commensurate amount of the original black oil-quenched case-hardened finish that has developed a small amount of mottling over time. The bolt retains about 90-92% of the original blue on the shroud and handle, with a mottled pewter gray patina on the bolt body. The trigger guard, floorplate, band, and nosecap have retained approximately 85-90% of their original blue, with the balance turned freckled brown, mainly on the trigger guard bow, and front end of the magazine floorplate. The correct, clipless handguard without sight groove in the "hump" is in fine-excellent condition with only some minor handling marks in the original oil finish. The stock has a correct "S" stamp at the forend tip, and is in fine shape except for a small triangular chip at the heel on the right side, and a nearly invisible grain separation crack on top of the wrist running back from the receiver. Both the "P (in circle)" firing proof and the "CN / 1908" inspector cartouche (Conrad Nelson) are crisp and clear, and the smooth steel buttplate is in excellent shape with much of the original blue remaining, and vibrant color case-hardening on the stock compartment lid. Additionally, a 1906-dated, Rock Island Arsenal sling, lightly flaked at the flex points, but still serviceable nevertheless, has been installed. This is a simply excellent, all-correct example of a desirable initial production Rock Island ‘03, and would make a stellar addition to any collection.
