Description:
Antique SWEDISH Model 1887 “SYSTEM TORNELL” Nagant 7.5mm OFFICER’S Revolver

1 of 2,600 Delivered to the SWEDISH ARMY by NAGANT

Here we present an antique Swedish Model 1887 “System Tornell” Nagant Revolver made at Fabrique d'armes Émile et Léon Nagant circa 1888 in Liege, Belgium. The Fabrique d'armes Émile et Léon Nagant, later known as L. Nagant & Cie, Liège, was a Belgian firm established in Liège in 1859 as a manufacturer of firearms and later automobiles. Leon Nagant was the inventor of this revolver and is most well know for the Russian Model 1895 Nagant revolver.

Improved gunpowder types that allowed higher velocities meant that towards the end of the 19th century, countries were turning to smaller calibers. These led to increased impact energy, better trajectory, and greatly increased shooting range. In 1884 the Swedish Arm Commission decided to reduce the calibers of their rifles and revolvers to a more modern caliber. The commission tried several revolvers, including the 7.5mm Swiss Model 1882 and the Norwegian 9mm Model 1883 Nagant revolver. Their decision for the revolver was a combination of the two, creating the Model 1887 revolver was the 7.5mm with Emile & Leon Nagant chosen to construct this revolver and was adopted as the Swedish Officer Revolver Model 1887.
The revolver was easy to disassemble, and the mechanism was double action or could be cocked and fired like the single action older revolvers. After production, a weakness was discovered that the drum could be turned when the hammer was in its down position. Lieutenant T.F. Törnell patented a device that blocked the drum even in the down position. Very few of these “System Tornell” systems were equipped on these revolvers, making this a scarce example.

This revolver was initially intended only for officers and non-commissioned officers. Officers were required to buy their own weapons for a sum of 38 Swedish Krona. Non-commissioned officers used their service weapons at no cost.

The overall condition is very good. Excellent action. Original finish. Legible markings. Bright bore. Both grips are in good shape with less than average handling. Numbers match.
