Description:
***   NEW PRICE   ***   Handsome bar-in-wood hammergun from one of Birmingham’s greatest makers who are still in business today. Serial number 5271 was made circa 1873 and has rebounding hammers, percussion style fences, and the signature Powell lift-up toplever. Nicely sculpted hammers that sit below the shooter’s line of sight when cocked. And with its push-up toplever opening the action can be opened when the hammers are cocked – a very nice feature. Weight is 6lb 9oz.   ***   The 28” nitro steel sleeved barrels are chambered for 2-1/2” shotshells and have extractors. They are topped by a raised solid concave game style rib. A solid job of sleeving was done on this Powell including the installation of a new rib but only part of the maker’s name and the entire address is still visible on the remnants of the original rib. The right barrel is bored 0.728 with a constriction of 0.020 for Half choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.035. The left barrel is bored 0.729 and has a constriction of 0.040 for Full choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.032.   ***   The stock and forearm are crafted out of very nicely figured European walnut. The finish is in nice condition and the checkering is crisp. The forearm has a Deeley release. Those familiar with bar-in-wood hammerguns know that the stocks tends to crack on the bottom. This gun is no exception but the crack has been professionally repaired and is unlikely to give further trouble. Stock dimensions are 14-3/8” including a thin checkered ebony buttplate by 1-1/2” by 2-1/4”. Cast off for the righthanded shot.   ***   This is an interesting and nice handling bar-in-wood hammergun. It functions as it should and the hammer springs are strong. Sleeved with nitro steel barrels it still has plenty of life left in it. You will be proud to uncase it at the range or carry it afield.  ***   Naturally the photographs are part of the description. Not for sale where prohibited by state or local laws. Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period and will only accept returns at buyer’s expense.
