Description:
"

Unusual early .577 caliber centerfire bolt action rifle. This rifle is based on Carter and Edwards patent WS 507. The overall length is approximately 42.5". The 23" round barrel has an excellent bore with strong rifling. The barrel and action retain approximately 98% blue. The Enfield style bands have approx. 60% blue. The brass trigger guard, butt plate, and nose cap have a smooth even aged patina. The bolt has visible case colors. The stock is fine with checkering at the wrist and forend, a few storage dents, and no cracks or chips. The top of the breech is marked in an oval Carter & Edwards Patent with WS 507 inside the oval. This is repeated on the top rear of the bolt. The bottom of the trigger guard is engraved Walter Scott/47 Princip St/Birmingham. The cleaning rod and two sling swivels are present. The action functions correctly including an unusual sliding safety that blocks the firing pin. Walter Scott, the most likely manufacturer of this fine rifle, operated at 47a Princip St, Birmingham, in 1872 and 1873. This is a great example of an early high-quality breech-loading centerfire cartridge rifle. It may well be unique.
