We are tremendously proud to offer this gem of a shotgun handcrafted by the master gunmaker himself, Harris Holland. Although Harris took his nephew, Harry, as an apprentice in 1861, these early guns were labeled as H. Holland even after Harry was made a full partner in 1867. The Holland and Holland brand was first used in 1876, and it is still going strong today. This fine example was made in the year of our Lord 1868, within what many consider the Golden Age of double barrel shotguns. No effort was spared for these best guns, with select Circassian walnut, imported Damascus barrels, hand fitted and polished parts, and intricate engraving that took many hours to execute. It is hard to believe that this fine double is 154 years old. The nicely browned 30 inch complex Damascus barrels are beautiful, and the bores are nearly perfect. That is amazing for a pinfire that came from an era of 100% black powder use. The chambers are 2 1/2 inches, and at least one manufacturer still offers these early cartridges by the box. The highly figured walnut is just as stunning, with hardly a mark and a superior fit to the steel. The checkering is bold and sharp, and the checkered horn butt plate is also outstanding. The action is smooth and tight, with the underlever still to the right of center. The drops are 1 3/4 and 2 3/4 inches, with an LOP of 14 3/16 inches. She tips the scales at a svelte 6 pounds, and is a joy to carry and point. The Holland and Holland name commands great respect in the shotgun world, and prices to match. Regardless of age, just about any gun will fetch way into the 5 figure range, and pairs can exceed 6 figures. I will list this sparkling example for much less. If you have been looking for the right H&H to collect or for investment, but want one that will draw far more attention than any new model, then look no further.
