Description:
The R7 Mako is one of Kimber’s most recent entries into the self-defense handgun market. The first thing that separates the Mako from its competitors is the method of operation. Lockup on the Mako is achieved by means of a tapering, rectangular lug at the top of the barrel just above the chamber which mates with a corresponding recess in in the underside of the slide’s top surface. As a round is being fired, the barrel and slide remain locked together for a brief moment, traveling to the rear on the frame rails as one unit until the chamber pressure drops enough for the barrel and slide to safely unlock. Unlocking is done by an angled channel on the lower surface of the barrel acting against the slide stop running through the central block mounted on the grip frame. When the channel and the pin begin to contact one another, the barrel is forced downward, unlocking it from the slide. The other end of the channel, which is shaped like the letter “U”, prevents the barrel from moving any further to the rear, and as the slide continues to move rearward, the spent casing is ejected from the pistol. Using a locking lug on the barrel is not a new concept, as some early pistol designs used this feature as well. In any case, the purpose of this design is to improve accuracy and reduce felt recoil, ensuring that rounds hit the target in a tighter and more consistent pattern. As mentioned previously, the slide’s top surface is solid or “hooded”, and thus, the ejection port is more reminiscent of the ejection port on an Uzi sub machine gun than on a conventional pistol. This allows for the ejection port to vent gasses and spent casings away from the optic, protecting it from potential harm. One very nice feature of the Mako is that like Glock optic ready models, the pistol can mount both the optic and still retain its rear sight. In fact, the Mako slide is “Glock-cut” for ease of finding aftermarket sights. This example is the O.I. or “optic installed” version. Like the acronym suggests, the Mako is fitted with the Crimson Trace CTS-1500 red dot optic. The iron sights are TruGlo Pro Night Sights with orange front ring and white rear dots for better contrast in low light conditions. Also aiding the Mako’s accuracy is the Performance Carry Trigger, which is designed to give a smooth, consistent pull. On top of this, the muzzle of the barrel is crowned to improve accuracy as well. The pistol shown is lightly used but remains in good condition with little physical wear. It comes with its original box, manual, and both the flush and extended magazines.
