French Columberg Model 1777 Flintlock Musket
This model 1777 has been modified from its original configuration, shorter 20 inch barrel with new brass front sight, cut down stock and front band (proofed with a crown? over an "M") modified or changed showing how over 200 years of usage, firearms are salvaged and untilized for various means. Butt stock has been shaved to fit the cheek and in the same place a primitive cross has been carved. This musket may have been used as a cavalry piece due to its much shorter length. Overall length is 35 inches.
The lock plate bears an inscription with the factory name Koninlijke Geweerfabriek Culemborg and is stamped with an award winning L (there may be an NG brand stamped on the inside but we did not take the firearm apart, info on the NG brand is being retained from an example in the Rjiksmuseum in the Netherlands). M 1777 is stamped on the tail of the barrel and possibly an S on the underside and an unidentifiable mark (S and unidentifiable mark info also came from the Rjiksmuseum example). A compass design is stamped into the stock. Two stage action works nice and tight, circa 1807 - 1809
