Description:
Although this rifle appears to be made of stainless steel, it is not. Examination has confirmed that it is not simply bare carbon steel “in the white” either. It is in fact, nickel plated. The work was done by a professional, hence the “stainless steel” look and the markings on the receiver and barrel being intact. Winchester did experiment with stainless steel for barrels back around 1926 but discontinued this in 1930-31. Winchester reintroduced stainless steel barrels briefly in the late 1940’s to early 1950’s for the Model 52 rifle. This Model 75 was produced in 1941, well out side the range of either time frame. More importantly, Winchester only produced stainless steel barrels during the two time frames; they did not produce stainless steel receivers until much later. Stainless steel was very much in its infancy at the time, and while some firearms, like the M1 Garand with its gas cylinder, had stainless steel parts, the first all stainless steel firearm did not arrive until 1965 with the introduction of the Smith & Wesson Model 60 Chiefs Special. The stock was also carefully refinished to give a black hue as opposed to the usual brownish one. As a Target model, the barrel is 28” long. The mounted scope is an old Redfield fixed 12x built for long range shooting. Overall the rifle is in excellent shape and would be a very accurate shooter.
