ATTRACTIVE COMMERCIAL THIRD MODEL RUSSIAN REVOLVER, #48XXX, ONLY 13,500 MANUFACTURED 1874-1878. These big frontier six-shooters are marked in English where the Russian contract arms have Cyrillic markings. This is the model with the distinctive "spurred trigger guard" which has never been fully explained- some say it was for the middle finger to rest with the first finger on the trigger and some say it was so the revolver could be tucked into a belt or sash and catch on the "spur." Even though limited production, these were fairly popular on the frontier where fast loading and reloading were important. Like the Schofield, tipping the barrel down ejected the empties and left the entire cylinder exposed for fast reloads. This example has the desirable blue finish, which has turned mainly to an uncleaned plum/brown. There is still some good blue in the most protected areas, but mainly it is an even plum/brown. Serial numbering on these has often been misunderstood. The serial number is on the butt. Assembly numbers are on the cylinder face, barrel latch, barrel (under the latch) and on the frame under the grips. The grips on this revolver have the serial number stamped inside which matches the butt serial number. The frame under the grips and other parts just mentioned have the matching assembly number. The walnut grips show handling and some wear, but are not cracked or chipped. All markings are sharp and clear. including the "1874" date with rectangle around it on the butt by the serial nunmber. The action is tight and the hammer spring and ejector springs are strong and functioning correctly. The half-moon front sight appears to have had some lead or silver applied to the very top portion, assumedly to aid visibility to the front sight in aiming. It is barely noticeable and could probably be easily be removed. The bore is surprisingly bright and excellent with sharp rifling. One of the more distinctive of the big .44 Russian caliber handguns of the period.
