WORLD WAR I NEW SERVICE .455 ELEY CALIBER, #89XXX WITH BRITISH PROOFS, MADE 1915. Interestingly, British officers were required to purchase their own sidearms during World War I. This could have very well been such a purchase. All markings are sharp and clear with the "crossed pennants" stamping on the rear face of the cylinder and on the frame ahead of the cylinder on the left side and British proofs behind the cylinder above the cylinder latch. Many of these have had their cylinder chambers bored out to .45 Colt chambering at a later date, this one is still the original .455 chambering. Fine blue overall with normal light holster wear and edge wear, with the back strap and forward portion of the bottom of the trigger guard showing brown from age and wear. The lanyard ring is intact and the front sight has not been altered. Correct barrel markings of Colt address and last patent date of 1905 clear. The grips are a replacement and slightly oversized which could easily be trimmed to fit. Tight action lock up when the hammer is pulled (this is when Colts lock their cylinders) and excellent, bright bore. Probably saw service in the trenches as this one was made three years before the end of the war. Lots of history!
