Here we present an antique Merwin, Hulbert & Co. Single Action Revolver, made circa the 1870s by Hopkins & Allen in Norwich, Connecticut. Only a few thousand were produced. These revolvers are considered today to be some of the best made of the late 19th Century and the Wild West, even better in some minds than similar Colts and Smith & Wessons. These pistols certainly tended to have very well-thought and different features than their competition, and they were extremely well-made.
One such feature was the method of ejection. Loading was achieved by placing the hammer at half-cock and being able to revolve the cylinder to single feed cartridges. These early guns had a pierced recoil shield, as this one does, rather than the more common sliding loading gate. The aperture is set so that it will not let the cartridges fall out when the hammer is either at rest or fully cocked. It will only line up with the chambers when in the half-cocked position. If one wanted to unload the gun, they could simply push the latch back on the bottom of the gun, twist the barrel and cylinder assembly and pull forward. Only the empty brass would come out as the space created was shorter than a loaded cartridge, enabling the shooter to top of his gun and keep rounds available. An ingenious method was designed to achieve this that included a machined cut on the cylinder axis pin and a ledge on the breech face that kept the cartridge rims underneath. This system was also advantageous for forcefully removing stuck cartridges, providing lots of mechanical advantage.
The overall condition is very good. Original nickel finish/patina. The action remains strong, though there is a chamber on which the hammer will not stay cocked. The bore is in good shape for age with good rifling. The trademark dog’s head grips are in nice condition. A nice example of this neat little alternative to the Colts and Smith & Wessons that were far more prolific!
